Are you thinking of organising a vegan barbecue? At first glance such a choice may seem challenging, but with a little planning and preparation it is possible to create a tasty and satisfying experience for all diners.
What to serve: ideas for your menu
First of all, what is a vegan barbecue? Quite simply, a barbecue that only includes plant-based foods; therefore no meat, fish, dairy products, eggs or honey. A step up from the vegetarian barbeque that we have already talked about.
Let’s start with the choice of ingredients: focus mainly on vegetables, pulses, tofu, seitan and tempeh, but don’t limit yourself to a ‘simple’ grill or salad.
You can, for example, make a tasty burger made from lentils or other pulses such as quinoa or chickpeas. Or grill a nice Portobello mushroom: its firm, juicy texture is reminiscent of a meat burger.
If you have chosen a barbecue with a Palazzetti oven for your outdoor kitchen, we suggest you also serve some slices of pizza: just replace the mozzarella with a vegan variety! The base recipe is the same.
Space for flavourings
Tofu, seitan and tempeh can seem a little bland to some palates: this is when your culinary imagination comes into play. Experiment with spices, marinades and sauces to make your dishes really special! Any ideas?
- Prepare a marinade for the tofu with soy sauce, ginger and a sprinkling of garlic for an oriental touch;
- serve your kebabs or vegan meatballs with a salsa of sun-dried tomatoes and almonds: you can prepare it like a pesto or give it a touch of acidity by adding fresh parsley and a few drops of vinegar wine;
- take inspiration from Mexico, with pico de gallo (with tomatoes, onion, green chillies, coriander and hot chillies) or guacamole (with avocado, lime and green chillies);
- use tahina (sesame seed paste) to season your vegan burgers or as a base for hummus!
Remember, vegan grilling is not only delicious, it’s also healthy and environmentally friendly. Choose quality ingredients and have fun experimenting with new recipes on your Palazzetti barbecue!
