Being able to organise spaces in the best possible way without compromising on looks is always a dilemma. So what’s the best way round this problem? A good option is design shelving, you just need to know how to choose the right sizes and apply a little creativity.

What size to choose

Space optimisation is (of course) a matter of measurements, a concept that also applies to shelves. There are shelves of all shapes and sizes on the market, but before moving on to purely aesthetic choices you will have to get your dimensions right! It’s really essential to decide in advance how you plan to use your shelves. If the purpose is purely decorative, a surface on which to place picture frames and small objects to adorn the room, 5cm deep shelves will suffice. If, on the other hand, your objective is to have new functional spaces to support bulky tools, then robust shelves of much larger dimensions will be necessary. Be careful though, not to go overboard because shelves which are too deep (especially if placed high up) can be difficult to access: if you have free reign over how to manage the space, the best choice is to alternate between different sizes, so as not to limit possibilities (and functionality!).

5 ideas on how to use design shelving

Once you have identified your available space and decided on the size of the shelves you need, you can move on to your aesthetic choices. Here we have selected some original ideas for design shelves: get inspired to furnish your home!
